When studies showed these ads did nothing to turn kids, adults, hedgehogs, or excessive quantities of yellow off drugs, the government promptly quashed the studies. When, after years of having ads against all drugs, the studies showed that drug use was essentially a constant, and the tide of public opinion was turning against prohibition of weed? Their big bright idea was to focus their efforts, you guessed it, on weed.

Drug prohibition has nothing to do with whether a drug is dangerous, deleterious, or otherwise problematic. It has to do with control. Drugs are tailor-made for doing nothing while seeming like you're an effective politician. They're also tailor-made for dealing with dissidents, alongside another dozen regulations. Even if someone manages to keep their nose completely clean, it's virtually impossible to prove in court that the drugs were planted on you. Who would doubt a cop? It sounds crazy and paranoid to say someone planted drugs on you, when defending yourself from a mandatory minimum sentence.

Hey! I want superpowers!! If that's what marijuana does, I wonder what meth does?

But seriously, I remember reading comic books as a kid, and at one point they had an anti-drug ad in the comics. It had a picture of a hypodermic and said "The hit that ended the ballgame." For the longest time, I had no idea what the heck the ad meant or was talking about! Even today, the double-entendre of it just doesn't do much for me.
