Hope for Change 2008

It’s high time I said something about the 2008 presidential election. Each election, the candidates seem more and more alike. If you think this is about Barack Obama and John McCain, you’re not looking deeply enough. This is every election.

  1. lovely post. Just two fists of the same brutal system. Is the Anarchy Boogeyman getting a little chubby, or did the presence of a tasty-looking sandwich just throw me off?

” Our two parties have become nothing but two wings of the same bird of prey.”

He was refering to the two oldest political parties in U.S. politics.

” There is not a dime’s worth of difference between Democrats and Republicans.”

yep who’d you rather be fisted by?

    Brilliant as always, Dale!

Random thought about the bench… Something about it just reeks of socialist parks! Of course I can’t speculate what benches would look like in private parks, but I’m sure they would be different somehow. Going to a public park to have one’s lunch isn’t very anarchy-boogie-man-like, is it? Real anarchists wolf down their lunch without leaving their computer! Bonus points if you continue typing with one hand.

  5. Adam says:

Small nitpick: it’s “your” not “you’re.”

  6. I love it …. the state is serious about change this time.
They might even go black or with a chic

    > Small nitpick: it’s “your” not “you’re.”

Doh! I’m usually really good about those. I guess I was in a hurry to get the thing drawn since I started really late. I’ll hot-fix that.

    > Is the Anarchy Boogeyman getting a little chubby…?

The ABM is vaguely amorphous but is generally kinda chubby. He’s just hunched up on a bench right now. Check out the first ABM strip ever and you’ll see he’s pretty pear-shaped.

Dale, I’m curious – you draw the text by hand, right? Is there a freely-available font that would work just as well? I’m thinking of a simple Web app that lets people generate versions of the image with their own text in the bubbles, like Dilbert.com “mashups”. I’ve done something very similar before using PHP’s GD library.

Oh, and if you decide to get a team of Korean animators to make an animated version on the cheap, how would the Iron Fist sound? Russian accent or German? LOL

  10. Agape says:

I figured the right hand would sound like Dubya, the left hand would sound like Clinton. Though if you wanted to emphasize the identicality, you could use the same fist and just make a statesman sound. That sort of grand, fully-enunciated pomposity that screams politician. American generic accent though. That’s the face of the iron fist of the state these days.

Dale (and Alex), Blambot (http://blambot.com) has a pile of free fonts for comic use. There are plenty of other fonts out there, if you don’t see what you’re looking for out there.

  12. Two sides of the same blade, both as sharp.

  13. Dale says:

Alex, I rarely draw the text by hand unless I need a certain effect. Most of the time I use Purisa which is available in Inkscape for the text. Comic Sans is another popular comic text that I have used rarely.

Just to let you know that I replaced the toon on my blog with the corrected “your”. Hope you get some crossover reads and coverage.
